There was a reasonable recline but the whole seat business is bizarre. To lie flat, you need to have the steward turn the seat over. The use of a seat mattress did make for a comfortable sleep, but when wanting to sit up again had to have the seat "turned over" again. I booked a veggie meal, because sure as apples, if I don't, I end up with the only choice being meat, which I do not eat. I asked for seafood as soon as I boarded, but they either did not have enough loaded, or they could not be bothered (this one, I think) and I had what I asked for, except I asked for veggie, not "poor veggie". The seats face away from the windows. They have "the largest windows in any passenger airplane" and the expensive seats face away from the window. Seriously? To see the view flying down the Southern Alps, I had to kneel on my seat and lean over the headrest. The steward was lovely and I was privately reassured by a staff member, the seats are on the way out. Sooner the better, for me.
Pretty comfortable premium economy seats, decent food and huge pillows for PE. A bit snarky staff though, which isn't really suitable for an airline that flies to Asian countries, as people expect a different behaviour from the staff.
Middle seats sucks, no matter how you put it. At least you can sort of support your legs on the literature pouch and the leg rest lifts up higher than what I've found in PE on other airlines. Decent food, if a bit odd combinations.
Middle seats are horrible, although this was at least a short flight. Unfortunately the staff isn't particularly nice. There was food on my partners seat and snot on her "clean" blanket and they treated us as if it was our fault even though we'd just boarded. The service manager was rather rude and would talk over my partner and direct all his questions to me instead. Not very professional at all.
I was in seat 6j, and was very impressed. The seat itself was very comfortable with good recline and a very comfortable pillow. When it converted to a lie flat bed with matress, again it was very comfortable, and the second pillow really gave me a good sleep. As it was at the back of the cabin, the extra "shelf" in the right between the seat wall and the bulkhead was great for putting bits and lieces on
This seat is very comfortable with legrest, a great incline and winged headrest but I still require a pillow to support my neck. Great view of the Business Class sleep pods. Cabin is quiet and the ambient lighting helps sleep. Food options were satisfying but the lack of real champagne compares unfavourably with PE on Singapore Airlines on the same route. I think the seat and cabin on this aircraft are superior to the 777 that Singapore Airlines flies. The entertainment options are fewer though. Thanks to the crew who enabled my quick exit for a very short transit at Changi.
BEWARE: 787-9 seats, although in a familiar ANZ herringbone configuration, are smaller/compressed than the 777 seat; like they took the seating and shrunk it by 15% or so. Shorter, narrower and with all around less room. Witnessed a larger and frequent passenger downgrade to Premium Economy because he just couldn't fit although he is fine in the 777 seating up front. Everything is identical in amenities and features but closer together and because of the shrinking, arm rests etc are misaligned. ANZ, a fantastic airline, just took an unpopular class configuration and made it worse by making it smaller on this airframe.
2 or 3hours before landing, galleys are bothersome for prepare breakfast.
The oddity that annoys me about this seat is there is little recline with the seat. To lie fully flat, one has to get up as the seat back flips forward. So you don't have much angle of recline in the seat; it's either upright, a wee bit of recline or get up and put it fully flat.
Comfortable seating though the seat width could improve. Entertainment section is excellent but I could see a lot of Indians on the flight. So the Indian movies sector could do with wider selections. In short more comfortable than most other long haul flights even though I was on economy. Of course ANZ on board service is the best!
best Business class seat across the entire fleet. But still not good enough for 5k a piece. Can't wait for the new Business class seat coming at the end of this year.
Agree with other reviews--odd to sit at an angle. I found "bed" narrow and hard, even with thin "mattress". Service often too effusive, and meals not deluxe (a burger?). But really glad for non-stop to Chicago!
It is one of the only seat where you can almost enjoy the window
First time in a 789, and frankly I was disappointed. The seat pitch left me (178cm) feeling cramped and after ~2 hours of this 11 hr flight it was painfully obvious that the seat pans had little or nu stuffing. After 8 hours it was excruciating. Whoever selected these seats should have spent more than 30 seconds in them with another seat 29 inches in front of them. I will do my utmost to avoid this aircraft in the future no matter whose colours it is in (almost identical experience with Virgin Atlantic 789s)
great seat spacious wide and comfy. quiet cabin too, excellent service and good food presented on real crockery and cutlery, with a wide choice on the menu, copious amounts of drinks wine spirts beer etc, in real glasses, very friendly airteam, good bye econoomy.
That Crew often open upper storage to take out additional headphones is bothersome.
Flight taken June 1st 2018. I noticed that all of the other economy seats had a foot rest than came out so when you reclined your legs were lifted off the ground for more comfort. This wasn't available on row 38 in the middle. I would therefore say this seat is inferior to others.
SIN to AKL Emergency exit on 787. Legroom lovely. But seat armrest against plane wall so almost impossible to sit properly if you have a passenger next to you. Worst seat ever.
I fly solo between AKL and HNL 6 times a year for business on the Dreamliner 787. I highly encourage solo flyers to pay the extra for the Sky Couch option. I find it superior to Business for a fraction of the cost. Who cares about the food, I wanna sleep and at 6'2" I can comfortably curl and zzzzz.
Fantastic airline with great service. Premium seats gave a true premium experience, with fantastic legroom for a 6'3" frame, even when compared to any other premium seats that I have experienced. 10/10 AirNZ.
