Having flown Cathay HKG-JFK in 1st and now JAL NRT-ORD in 1st, I've found a few differences. Service in both is impeccable although I do prefer the Japanese sense. The Salon Champaign in JAL was superior to the Krug on CX. The food was excellent on both as was the service. There are 8 seats in JAL and 6 in CX. The seats are a bit wider on CX and my wife and I could sit together and watch movies. Great! Alone on JAL it was not an issue. I read a review completely condemning the food, service, equipment and can only assume that the flyer...I can assume nothing as he just needs his own plane. I will prob take JAL HND-JFK this next summer. Ah! The lounges....yes....the CX 1st class lounge in Hong Kong is not to be missed.
Row 5 on this aircraft is great as you are in your own little cabin of 7 people and the crew always keep this part darker than the main business class section, so it helps when trying to get some sleep
Flew 5E SFO-HND. I would avoid the middle seats. They are extremely narrow, confined, and awkward. There is literally zero storage space to the sides, and nowhere to rest your arms. I would also avoid any seat in the mini-cabin except possibly the windows due to galley noise. Between feeling trapped in the seat and the very warm cabin, this was not a pleasant flight. Service was okay, food was excellent.
JAL flight 10 on 7-23-19. Phenomenal experience. Seat was extremely comfortable and wide. Great to lounge and as a bed. My wife was in 1G and our son was in 1A. His seat and IFE were not working properly. 2A was open so the flight attendants moved him without us even asking. Food was restaurant quality (having just spent 2 weeks in Japan). Drank an entire bottle of 2003 Salon and most of a bottle of Cristal on the 12.5 hour flight. Beef curry was excellent as a snack. Had the Japanese meal for lunch and the western options for breakfast before landing. Service was impeccable. Best flight ever for us. Used AA points for award travel.
I was in 47G, a standard economy aisle seat in the rear-most section of the plane. I thought this was an awesome economy class product. Generous seat pitch and recline. Legroom is worthy of "economy plus" seating on a US domestic airline and 3-3-3 seating which means no one feels hemmed in. Food and beverage service were topnotch compared to other airlines' economy class, as was the IEF. JAL is the easy choice for international flights.
I flew from Chicago to Tokyo on this plane in seat 56A and sat in 56K on the return. Both seats were good. I had zero issues with the recline, seemed to be a full economy recline. The leg room is GREAT with this seat. I was able to put my outside foot between the seat in front of me and the body of the plane. I used the area next to my seat and behind for convenient storage of my shoes and jacket. The only negative I have is that the seat cushion was very worn out. I used by pillow under my butt on the return and it was much better.
The seat is very convenient at the front of the cabin. However it is right behind the lav/galley so you do get a lot of traffic passing by and hear the toilet flushing. It's not quite yellow but be aware. For a daytime flight, I found it enjoyable. Being in a private space next to the window was very nice
Meals served in boxes - like takeout from a Chinese restaurant. Tray table poorly designed, video sound very poor. My flight from LAX to NRT on AA was much superior than the JAL flight in almost all regards. Oh yes, and very tight seats, and I'm an average sized guy (170lbs)
Flew NY to Narita. 10E Middle seat - great if you like privacy and quiet. I Loved it. Privacy screens go up when seat belt sign goes off. It's like you're in your own mini cabin - you have direct access (all be it a narrow one) to the aisle and you don't tread over people. Slightly less storage than being on an aisle seat - but not having people walking past was worth that. Food was very good, and service "on demand" after the first meal is a great idea - . Comfortable seat with extra mattress provided. A much better business class than Qantas in my opinion. I'll fly it again and choose middle seat or window. Aisles are fine too - I just prefer more privacy. (All seats face forward by the way) The only average seats in business would be ones located near the toilets .

I flew this Japan Airlines Boeing 777-300ER configuration from LAX to Narita airport. Overall I was very satisfied with this economy class seat. Seat width and pitch are generous and in flight service was excellent. The seats can be a little on the hard side, but do have decent back support. This cabin layout makes long haul flying in economy a little more bearable compared to other airlines out there with 10 abreast seating on their 777s. The only potential issue with this seat is that it is close to the row with passengers flying with babies.
LOVED this seat. So comfortable. And as a bed, fantastic. Best F service I've ever experienced -- the TV, the Cristal champagne, the bed...
I am incredibly experienced world traveller and I took the chance on flying JAL back to London, over BA. I was incredibly disappointed and would not recommend this airline if you can avoid it. To begin with the food was inedible and I am very serious about this. For a 14 hour flight I basically ate rice, bread and chocolate. If you have to take this flight, bring your own food with you. In addition, be aware that the food options are extremely limited at Handeda so you will have to bring food with your from outside the airport.Yes they brag about their mattress choices, but it is so thin it does not matter. The mattress pads on Cathay are just as good. The flight attendants spoke nearly no English, and were incredibly slow with everything that they did. The entertainment system was abysmal. There were only a handful of movies to choose from and no TV shows from the past 5 years. It was also incredibly hard to navigate as the technology was old. The suite itself was pretty old and run-down. I will never fly JAL again if I have the choice.
I was booked in seat 24C but I moved to 56A in order to have a row to myself. The recline was great and I was never bothered by being near the restroom. This was by far the most comfortable seat I've ever had I coach. Japan Airlines is fantastic and I would fly anywhere in the world with them.
I agree that the First Class service is excellent and much better than BA or Cathay Pacific . My only complaint is that the middle seats seam rather dark and you cannot see anything out of the windows when seated.
For a coach seat, this aircraft is EXCELLENT. I flew this on JL61/LAX-NRT, and I was very pleasantly surprised by the generous amount of legroom. I'm 5'8" (173cm), medium build and the seat had enough legroom for me to cross my legs! On the way back, I flew JL60/KIX-LAX and boy oh boy, the 787 seat config was horrible and the legroom was something out of a standard US domestic flight, not an 11.5 hour flight.
This the best Economy seat I have ever sat in on a 777 (beaten only by some Middle-eastern and Asian A380 seats). Great leg room, great seat width. No equipment boxes stealing your foot space (despite an excellent IFE system with a huge movie choice and a large screen).
In the business class, the partition between seats blocks the outside view more than you think. If you think the outside vista is the important part of your flight, be sure to get window seat(A/K), although it tend to be occupied first.
The curtains surrounding the lavatory mean that it is not generally a problem. The seat does suffer the exit row problem of being a little narrower thsn other premium economy seats as the tray table and screen are stored in the armrest.
